Tony Oursler is a multimedia artist specialized in installations, performances and video creations. Oursler has always been interested in Big Brother, surveillance cameras, facial recognition technology, police photos, and Facebook's DeepFace. Oursler's exhibition consists of six 4-foot-tall painted aluminum faces, one jet-printed wooden face, forming 'primitive masks' articulated by connecting data points. These spots are backlit by LED displays, with eyes and mouths. Sound elements of contemplative poems that discuss privacy, identity and personality. The cardinal points never move and include the corners of the eyes, the corners of the mouth, the tip of the nose, the cheekbones and the perimeter of the face. By making connections between these points, Oursler is filtering surveillance data through the portrait lens to reach a series of red, black, white, blue, and gold colored faces.
