Ralph Eugene Meatyard work spanned many genres and he experimented with new means of expression, from dream portraits, abandoned places, to multiple exposures, motion blur, and other methods of photographic abstraction. The blurred figure is a hallmark of his work. Meatyard worked on productive explosions, often leaving his film undeveloped for long periods, and then working feverishly in his makeshift darkroom at home. For years, Meatyard persuaded his children, family and friends to put on one of the Woolworths masks and pose in front of his camera. The photographs became the best known of the images he left behind when he died. Meatyard addressed the surreal "masks" of identity and the ephemeral nature of surface matter. He chose the environment, then looked at the particular light at that time and place, and began to compose scenes using the camera, telling his subjects where to stand, which face to face, whether to move or stay still. His work was experimental and instinctive.
