La fotografía ha sido una preocupación constante para el artista Michael Etzensperger durante los últimos años. A través de la reproducción fotográfica de esculturas, entendió el impacto de las imágenes de máscaras de las culturas occidentales tradicionales. Etzensperger comenzó a buscar imágenes de máscaras en diferentes tipos de libros ilustrados publicados a lo largo de los siglos XX y XXI. Se interesó por las cualidades cambiantes de las superficies determinadas por las técnicas de impresión, el material y la óptica de la cámara. Etzensperger comenzó a usar las imágenes de máscaras que recopiló superpuestas y creando nuevas imágenes. Obtuvo logros pictóricos, diferentes efectos y cualidades en las imágenes, de esta manera le dio un nuevo concepto y significado a las fotografías. Con este trabajo, Etzensperger creó el libro Masken (Máscaras) donde refleja el fenómeno cultural de las máscaras y los libros ilustrados en el arte del siglo XX.
Photography has been a constant concern to artist Michael Etzensperger during the last years. Through the photographic reproduction of sculptures, he understood the impact of mask images from traditional western cultures. Etzensperger began searching for masks images in different kind of illustrated books published throughout the 20th and early 21st centuries. He became interested in the changing qualities of surfaces determined by printing techniques, material, and camera optics. Etzensperger started using the mask images he collected overlapping different ones creating new images. He got pictorial achievements, different effects and qualities in the images, in this way he gave a new concept and meaning to the photographs. With this work Etzensperger created the book Masken (Masks) where he reflects the cultural phenomenon of masks and illustrated books in 20th century art.
