Hugo Arellanes es un fotógrafo que reflexiona sobre la ascendencia africana de las comunidades en México. Con fotografía e instalación, bajo el nombre de El Polvito en tus Zapatos, reúne una serie de fotografías y objetos que buscan hacer visibles las características de la cultura afroamericana en la Costa Chica de Oaxaca y Guerrero, como la danza y los rituales diarios. En este trabajo, analiza la invisibilidad de estas poblaciones negras, incluso dentro de sus propias estructuras. Hugo Arellanes destaca la necesidad de una verdadera representación para los afro-mexicanos. Critica cómo los medios de comunicación han apoyado y reforzado durante mucho tiempo los estereotipos en torno a la comunidad afrodescendiente, como el de madre soltera, pobreza, ignorancia y lenguaje vulgar.

Hugo Arellanes is a photographer who reflects on the African descent of the communities in Mexico. With photography and installation, under the name of El Polvito en tus Zapatos, he brings together a series of photographs and objects that seek to make visible features of African American culture on the Costa Chica of Oaxaca and Guerrero such as dance and daily rituals. In this work he discusses the invisibility of these black populations, even within their own structures. Hugo Arellanes highlights the need for true representation for Afro-Mexicans. He criticizes how the media has long supported and reinforced stereotypes around the Afro-descendant community, such as that of a single mother, poverty, ignorance and vulgar language.
